Pita Pit in the Williamsburg Yorktown Daily

Pita Pit in the Williamsburg Yorktown Daily in an article titled, "Tribe Square Business Owners Requesting Inclusion in W&M Meal Plans." The article begins by talking about the impact that The College of William and Mary’s mandatory meal program is having on the restaurants in Tribe Square. The article gives some specifics on how sales have dipped since the meal plan went into place, then gives details on the meal plan itself. They include some quotes from the college about their stance on the issue, and a student who lives in Tribe Square is quoted about his dissatisfaction with the mandatory meal plans. The article then goes into the problems caused by the fact that the restaurants exist in a building with student housing on top, and the restaurants on the bottom. The article ends with information about the William & Mary Real Estate Foundation and a note that the college official wouldn’t know more until January.  Click here for the entire article or begin below.

By: James Needham

Businesses at Tribe Square are struggling. The Crust is up for sale and both Pita Pit and MOOYAH Burgers, Fries & Shakes have experienced drops in sales this year.

It has sparked a response from the business owners of all four restaurants who have requested to be included on the mandatory meal plan being rolled out at the College of William & Mary. Pita Pit Owner Brandon Twine wrote a letter earlier this month to W&M’s Vice President for Finance Sam Jones, detailing how the businesses were working with a lawyer to work toward a resolution.

Last year, Pita Pit brought in $500,000 in sales, Twine said in an interview with WYDaily. With one month left in 2013, the business has so far brought in $330,000. In February 2012, MOOYAH Burgers, Fries & Shakes brought in about $60,000 in sales and this year brought in $30,000, said owner Alpen Patel.

Even businesses that couldn't possibly sell their products online, like fast food restaurants, can use social media.

Both the Mooyah! and Pita Pit locations at Tribe Square won nationwide Facebook contests this year
by collecting Facebook likes against other stores in their respective chains. The pay-off in each case was giving away free meals for a day to their customers. Helped by students at the College of William and Mary, both restaurants beat out competitors in cities many times larger than Williamsburg.

The value of social media, particularly for small businesses, is something recognized by economic development officials.

The article concludes with information that the restaurants are working with The College of William and Mary about inclusion in the plan, and the support of students to help them stay in business.  Click here for the entire article or begin below.

WILLIAMSBURG — Owners of the four restaurants in Tribe Square are worried the college's expanded mandatory meal plan is going to drive them out of business.

One of the four restaurants, The Crust, went up for sale on Friday. Twine said the other two, Subway and Mooyah!, are also suffering.

Retailers see the future in the palm of their customers' hands.

And for some, smartphone applications for shopping, paying and finding discounts aren't the future — they are the present.

The Pita Pit, for example, offers a free app that allows customers to order and pay for their meal wherever they are. At a new Edmond location, opening soon at 33rd and Broadway, they can even grab their food in the drive-thru, giving new meaning to “fast food.”

Oklahoma franchisee Ray Reyes, who operates the Norman and Edmond locations, said the app speeds up the whole process of ordering food. Within a minute, a customer can place an order; repeat orders take just seconds.

“Sometimes, we're just in a hurry,” he said.

Club made an early pit stop at Pita Pit to see whether its distinction as the world’s largest pita franchise held weight or if it was just a perk of extreme specificity.
