WILLIAMSBURG - Ending nearly a year of uncertainty in which they feared for the future of their businesses, the four restaurants in Tribe Square adjacent to the campus will be allowed to participate in the college's expanded student meal plan.

When the new policy was adopted, it mandated participation in the plan for on-campus students and and that they use the meal plan for a majority of their meals - the restaurants saw their business fall off steeply last fall.

"We were down almost 50 percent," said Pita Pit Owner Kimberly Twine.

Patience has finally paid off for Sumterites pining for the opening of the community's first Pita Pit at 1029 Broad St., Suite B. The popular restaurant, which promotes itself as a healthful alternative to fried fast foods, opened its doors at 10 a.m. Friday, two months after its much anticipated opening date in mid-June.

The owner had an explanation for why people's pita cravings remained unsatisfied.
